The range of Fraxel® treatments vary in aggressiveness, downtime, number of procedures needed and results. The most aggressive treatment, Fraxel® re:pair, can produce dramatic improvement for severely damaged skin. This is a single-treatment procedure, but will require more downtime and after-treatment wound care. Less-aggressive treatments, like Fraxel® re:store or Fraxel® re:fine, can produce significant results for mild to moderately damaged skin over the course of three to six treatments. Typically, there is no after-treatment wound care with these treatments and downtime is minimal.
When considering which treatment option is best for you, you and your physician should discuss the trade-off between downtime and results to determine the best option that fits your skin condition and your lifestyle.
How does the treatment work?
The laser targets aging and sun-damaged skin, creating microscopic wounds within specific areas beneath the top layer of skin. The body's natural healing process is triggered, accelerating the growth of new collagen and healthy skin. This leaves new, fresh skin cells.
How many treatments are required?
Two options are available. With the Fraxel® Repair treatment, one complete treatment is performed. Someone who wants to get recovery over all in one week is advised to choose this more aggressive treatment. For someone who is more suited to less downtime (one or two days), the Fraxel® Restore treatment is recommended. Plan four treatments spaced three to four weeks apart.
Are there any possible side effects?
Side effects are minimal and typically involve swelling and a sunburned effect, both of which subside in a few days to a week, depending on which treatment is chosen. Moisturizers alleviate these side effects. We recommend Ceratopic from SkinMedica.
There is a minimal risk of infection or scarring.
Will there be any downtime?
In most cases, there is limited downtime with Fraxel®.
What are the benefits of Fraxel® over other treatments?
Because Fraxel® has the impact of ablative lasers and the gentleness of nonablative lasers, healing time is significantly faster than with most other types of treatment. Makeup can be worn immediately following the treatment.
How soon will results appear?
Results will reach their full potential in two to three months. This time frame allows for complete healing and replacement of damaged tissue.
How does the treatment feel?
An anesthetic block or cream is applied to reduce the discomfort of the procedure. Most clients who feel tenderness describe it as a prickling sensation.
Instructions for after treatment:
Apply SPF 15-30 every day, and avoid direct sunlight for three months after the procedure.
